PANAJI: Exposure to real-life experiences and scenarios are essential for the growth of those aspiring to make it big in the design industry, said Dr Shwetha Mariyappanavar, Vice-Principal – JD School of Design, Goa.
She was speaking at the inauguration of the Hospitality Interior & Design Expo 2023, of which JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology has collaborated as a Knowledge Partner.
“Collaborations like these are essential for the growth of young designers. Exposure to industry experts and real-world scenarios is a vital part of their education,” she said.
The collaboration spells a pivotal milestone for aspiring designers. This partnership marked a luminous beginning and a path of discovery in the world of design. The three-day long event unfolded at Taleigao Exhibition Centre, Panjim, Goa on 13th October 2023 at 11am.
The inauguration commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising the dawn of enlightenment. Esteemed luminaries from the industry, including, Shri. Gaurish Dhond, President – GHRA; Ar. Sumedh Naik, President IIID Goa Chapter; Shri. P. P. Kulkarni, Assistant Director – MSME DFO; Ar. Sunil Sardesai; Ms. Sandra Agnes D’Souza, Director – South, JD School of Design, graced the occasion with their presence, illuminating the path for aspiring designers.
The event was not only about enlightening discussions but also hands-on experiences. JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology showcased mesmerizing student works. The stall featured innovative student models which were miniature stores from the visual merchandising perspective. There were two striking installations – Tensegrity Chair which was made from reclaimed woods from coastal regions. The second installation was fashioned out of reusable materials. The concept depicted the qualities of a chameleon that can blend into the environment it is put in. These works emphasised the creative potential of design aspirants.
Mr. Jivesh Sachdev, Managing Director – Hospitality Interior & Design Expo “JD School of Design has helped us to build in terms of Design and curating events.” He further explained, “The youth are the future and they will get to learn a lot from such design exhibitions. They get to understand the kind of products that are available, and learn about the industry through the seminars which are presided over by prominent architects.”
The celebration continued with students who clinched victory in the Poster Design Contest organized by JD School of Design. Violet Carmelin Fernandes from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Panjim and Neha G. Gavde from Goa Medical College (3rd year) won in the School and College category. The theme of the competition was ‘To Spread Environmental Awareness,’ and these young artists vividly illustrated this concept through their art.

Afterwards, the evening came alive with vibrant cultural performances by the students. The stage was graced with an array of talents, including dance, music, and drama, leaving the audience enthralled.
“We train students in design and proudly partner with HIDE 2023 as a Knowledge Partner. Our goal is to establish design as a serious and rewarding profession,” said Ms. Sandra Agnes D’Souza, Director – South, JD School of Design. She further emphasised, “We recognise the potential of design and that is why we have affiliated with Goa University for design degree programmes. The connection between art and design is profound, offering a diverse and beautiful career path. Making informed career choices is crucial, as a career spans decades and should be driven by passion and appreciation. We take the initiative to raise awareness, hence our commitment to industry collaborations for educating and empowering the youth.”
