PANAJI: The second day of the JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology in partnership with Hospitality Interior & Design Expo 2023 highlighted the vital connection between innovative design, sustainability, and a greener future.

The event witnessed an insightful seminar featuring renowned architect Ar. Gaurav Gupta and Deepa Subramaniam, Co-founder and Director of Woody Grass, as well as showcased design excellence and sustainable practices.

Gupta, Principal Architect and Urban Planner at DE:CA+PE Studio presented his award-winning project, the Caava/Kava Courtyard, during the seminar. He emphasized the use of bamboo furniture, harmonizing design within budget constraints, and highlighted its recognition in a prominent magazine.
Gupta also showcased a residential project, “Richie Rich in Lucknow,” featuring geometric patterns, rustic flooring, and innovative design transformations, emphasizing the importance of context in sustainable design. Gupta shared, “In the realm of design, we must remember climate considerations, material safety and less carbon footprint, for in this we will find the essence of true sustainability.”

Deepa Subramaniam, Co-founder and Director of Woody Grass, discussed the Greenhouse effect, emphasizing the significance of sustainability in design. She invoked the example of Chernobyl, a once desolate area that transformed into a green land after 30 years, emphasizing our role in shaping the future. Deepa Subramaniam reminded the audience, “The choice is ours in determining how we can influence our future through sustainable design choices.”

Post the seminar, the winners of the Photography Competition were felicitated. Sadik Shaikh clinched the winner title in the Student Category competition and Omkar Gawde who won in the Working Professional Category. The theme of the competition was Tropical Aesthetics and the talented duo captured stunning visuals that aptly portrayed the beauty and essence of the tropics.

Vedha Surendra Shirodkar, first-year student of BSc. in Interior Design at JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology shared, “I am grateful to my institute for partnering with HIDE 2023. This provides us with a platform to gain first-hand exposure to the market trends and the seminars by renowned architects educate us on the practical knowledge of the industry.” She further explained, “Despite being in the first year, I have been able to get access to this event which I doubt would be possible otherwise.”
