The hopes and aspirations of all sections of Goans found representation as the Hon’ble Captain Viriato Fernandes was administered the oath as newly elected South Goa Member of Parliament in18th Lok Sabha.

Paying tribute to the rich and varied heritage of his home state of Goa, Capt Viriato, had a traditional kunbi shawl draped over his shoulders as he took the oath in his mother tongue of Konkani. The kunbi shawl is representative of Goa’s kunbi tribe who comprise an important section of the state’s indigenous community. Going back many centuries, the tribal people have played a significant role in shaping Goa’s unique culture.

Speaking on this landmark occasion, Capt Viriato Fernandes reiterated his commitment to being the voice of his people. He spoke of the myriad long standing problems afflicting Goa and his determination to bring them up on the floor of the Lok Sabha.

“I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of South Goa who have placed their confidence and trust in me. This is a very critical time for South Goa which is presently facing a barrage of problems that are detrimental to the lives, well being and future of my constituents. I assure them that I will fight tenaciously to preserve and save Goa from the ongoing destruction of its beautiful natural environment and unique identity. I look forward to a constructive and fruitful term as the people’s representative in Parliament.”
