PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr  Pramod Sawant inaugurated a project that includes providing, installing and commissioning of Vacuum Sewer Network along with house connection for low lying areas in Panaji city with  5 years of operation and maintenance under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Mission at Mala, Panaji.

Dr  Sawant who holds the portfolio of PWD  Ministry said, the Vacuum Sewer Network set up at Panaji is the first of its kind in the country which will be significant in reducing water pollution caused by untreated sewage. Houses in low lying areas in Mala and St Inez  left without proper sewerage system will be benefitted with the project.

Chief Minister applauded the PWD for executing the project of Vacuum Sewer Network which would be way forward to curb direct discharge of wastewater in the river.

Councilors  Shubham Chodankar and Nilesh Morajkar, PWD (Water Supply)  Chief Engineer Santosh Mhapne, Superintendent Engineer Vishwambar Bhende, Executive Engineer  Pandurang Nadkarni, Assistant Engineer  Harish Jawaji, Nashville Infra Services Director  . Jatin Panchal and other were present on the occasion.

The project has been initiated by  Public Works Department under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Mission has cost Rs.8.52 crores which will include maintenance for a period of 5 years. The project is executed by the agency Nashville Infra Services  and technology support is rendered by the agency Iseki Vacuum System (REDIVAC)  for the project.

Although, Panjim city has a sewerage network, there are few pockets in the city left with no sewerage connections which  includes low lying areas like Mala and St Inez. In feasibility study it was observed that conventional gravity sewers and onsite wastewater treatment technologies were inappropriate for the low lying areas hence the vacuum sewerage system has been adopted for the Mala and St Inez areas.
