  4. Pope Francis’ Nativity Scene Decision Sparks Debate

The Vatican Nativity scene, designed by Palestinian artists Johny Andonia and Faten Nastas Mitwasi, has been removed from the Paul VI audience hall following a global controversy. The scene, titled “Nativity of Bethlehem 2024,” featured the infant Jesus resting on a traditional Palestinian keffiyeh, which many interpreted as a pro-Palestinian statement. The design choice sparked backlash from the Israeli and Jewish communities, with some questioning the pope’s intentions and accusing him of rebranding Jesus as Palestinian .

Pope Francis had unveiled the Nativity scene during a December 7 audience, calling for an end to war and conflict, particularly in Gaza, where he has repeatedly condemned the violence as “immoral” ³. The scene was crafted from olive trees in the Holy Land and featured a Star of Bethlehem made from mother of pearl, with an inscription in both Latin and Arabic.

The controversy surrounding the Nativity scene highlights the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of the Catholic Church in promoting peace and justice. The Vatican’s decision to remove the scene has sparked debate, with some arguing that it was a necessary step to avoid further polarization
