PANAJI: The consumer rights movement has significantly raised awareness among individuals regarding their rights as consumers, highlighting its growing importance and deep-rooted presence within society, stated Sanjit Rodrigues, Secretary of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, during an event commemorating National Consumer Rights Day.
This event was organized by the Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs at the Institute Menezes Braganza hall, Panaji.
Rodrigues further emphasized the necessity of promoting the consumer rights movement at the grassroots level, noting a concerning increase in incidents of fraud and deception. He remarked that individuals are often victimized in plain sight, underscoring the urgent need for education and awareness regarding consumer rights. He pointed out that while the government has implemented various laws to safeguard consumer rights, these measures alone are insufficient; public engagement and cooperation are equally essential.
The observance of National Consumer Rights Day serves as a reminder for all to reaffirm their commitment to protecting consumer rights, he reiterated. Rahul Sudan, Chief Editor of Direct Selling Today, served as the keynote speaker, providing insights to participants on empowering the modern consumer within today’s dynamic business environment through a PowerPoint presentation.
Additionally, Sanjit Rodrigues released a magazine featuring Landmark Judgements for the year 2023, published by the Goa State Consumer Commission.
The event was attended by Bela N Naik, President of the Goa State Consumer Commission, Roland Martins, Convenor of GOA CAN, consumers, students, and staff from the civil supply department, among others. Jayant Tari, Director of the Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, extended a warm welcome to all attendees.
