  3. MGP ANNOUNCES ALLIANCE WITH BJP FOR 2027 POLLS

PANAJI: The Maharashtrwadi Gomantak Party (MGP) on Tuesday announced its decision to ally with its current coalition partner BJP in the 2027 polls.

The statement comes almost a week after the meeting between the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and MGP leader and Power  Minister Sudin Dhavalikar over future tie-up.

Speaking to media persons, Dhavalikar said that MGP will continue its alliance with BJP in the 2027 election. He said that the decision was taken following a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“We have decided to go with BJP in the 2027 election. BJP is a bigger party …we have decided to continue our alliance,” he said.

Earlier last week, Sawant too had confirmed that he had discussion with Dhavalikar over future alliance.

BJP had fought the 2022 polls in alliance with MGP. While BJP emerged as the single largest party with 20 MLAs, MGP managed to win in two constituencies. After fighting elections as coalition partners in 2012, MGP had ended ties with the saffron party ahead of 2017 polls, before it could revive the ties in the last election.

Meanwhile, responding to the question on seat sharing, Dhavalikar said that the party randomly cannot demand for any seats without having any stronghold. “We need to work in those constituencies…build-up party…make a strong winnable ground and then ask for a seat,” he said.

He, however, maintained that the decision on seat sharing will be done once the election nears. He also said that MGP has been working hard in the last two years to expand and strengthen party-fold.
