WEST BENGAL: A viral video showing a senior female professor getting “married” to a student in a classroom at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) in West Bengal has caused a stir, leading the university to order an inquiry on Wednesday.
The incident took place at the Psychology Department of the university, located in Haringhata, Nadia district.
In the videos, the professor, dressed as a bride, and a first-year student performed various traditional Bengali Hindu wedding rituals, including the ‘sindoor daan’ (applying vermillion) and ‘mala bodol’ (exchange of garlands), all within the classroom setting.
The videos quickly went viral, drawing widespread criticism and outrage on social media.
In response to the incident, university officials formed a three-member inquiry panel to investigate the matter. The university also sought an explanation from the professor involved.
In her defence, the professor stated that the event was part of a psycho-drama demonstration used to explain concepts in her class. She claimed that it was not a real wedding but an academic exercise. She also said that the videos were meant for internal use and had been “leaked” without her consent, which she believed was done to tarnish the reputation of the Psychology Department.
