Congress support people’s agitations to protect environment and identify of Goa

PANAJI: The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has extended its full support to the people’s protests and agitations raising concerns about the mass destruction to the environment and identity of Goa.

The CLP which met under Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat discussed about the three projects proposed by the government namely railway double tracking, widening of national highway 4A and laying of power transmission line and claimed that these projects will cause severe damage to the environment as they pass through Bhagvan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary, and Mollem National Park. The three projects will affect the wildlife, forest and the identity of Goa, it said.

The CLP also decided to actively participate in the protests and agitations with people, informed Kamat.

“I informed CLP about the Memorandum with Ref No LOP/MNP/CEC/2020-21/18 dated 31/07/2020 sent to the Member Secretary and Committee Members of the Central Empowered Committee constituted by the Supreme Court and the copy of the said Memorandum was also sent to Prakash Javadekar, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The CLP condemned the ignorance shown by the Union Minister Prakash Javadekar about the three projects during his last visit to Goa. The CLP also condemned his statement stating that no representation was received by him pertaining to the Mollem Project,” Kamat said.

The CLP members expressed concerns about the three anti-farm laws brought in by the BJP government at the Centre. The CLP appreciated the efforts of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the agitation against the said laws by becoming the voice of the farmers.

The CLP members acknowledged the grand response received for the “Chalo Raj Bhavan Rally” and “Kissan Melava” at Rivona organised by the Congress Party. The CLP members will also participate in the Tractor Rally to be organised in Goa on 8th November by the Congress Party.

The CLP discussed about the prevailing COVID-9 pandemic situation in the State and  lauded the efforts of the Congress Party cadre of helping the people during pandemic lockdown as well as reaching out to people with help of medicines, sanitizers, masks etc.

The CLP decided to continue raising concerns of the people and also keep a close watch on the health care provided by the government, Kamat said.

Congress MLAs expressed deep concern about the rising debts of the State and failure of the government in financial management. The CLP condemned the act of the government of not considering Rs 100 crore Economic Revival Plan submitted by the Congress for marginalised sector.

The  deteriorating law and order situation in the State with steep rise in criminal activities such as murders, attack on women, drug trade, gang fights, robberies etc and failure of the government to nab the culprits and the real masterminds was also discussed at length during the meeting.

Kamat further informed that the CLP decided to demand a full-fledged Goa Legislative Assembly Session in November–December 2020 in which MLAs should get sufficient time to raise issues concerning the people of Goa. “I will write to the Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly demanding for an early session,” he said.
