THE GOA GOVERNMENT ON THURSDAY DISSOLVED 11 MUNICIPAL COUNCILS AS THEIR FIVE-YEAR TERM CAME TO END
PANAJI: The Goa government on Thursday dissolved 11 municipal councils as their five-year term came to end and appointed administrators as general elections could not be held due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Administrators were appointed for Margao, Mormugao, Mapusa, Bicholim, Cuncolim, Curchorem-Cacora, Quepem, Valpoi, Sanguem, Canacona and Pernem municipal council.
Prasanna Acharya has been appointed as administrator for Margao municipal council; Gurudas Pilernekar for Mormugao municipal council, Paresh Phaldesai for Mapusa; Vikas S N Gaunekar for Bicholim, Florina S Colaco for Cuncolim; Ashutosh Apte for Curchorem-Cacora; Deepali Naik for Quepem, Rajesh Ajgaonkar for Valpoi; Nilesh Daigodkar for Sanguem, Johnson Fernandes for Canacona and Ravishekhar Nipanikar for Pernem.
The State Election Commission (SEC), Altinho had earlier decided to hold elections to these 11 municipal councils on 18 October 2020 but due to COVID situation postponed the polls for a period of three months.
The term of two other municipalities ie Ponda and Sankhali ends in May 2023 while, the lone Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) will go to polls in March 2021.
