The judicial magistrate at Mapusa has granted bail to Chinmay Majumdar, who was arrested after he allegedly took 3-lakh from a person seeking a government job by promising to get her the job, but later failing to deliver on the promise.
According to the complaint filed by Smita Salgaonkar, Majumdar dishonestly induced the complainant that he will use his political influence and offered her job in government
department for which the complainant must pay him Rs3,00,000/- towards the job and also promised that if he fails to give a job he will return the money.
In his defence Advocate Myron Araujo claimed that the allegations in the said complaint against Mr Majumdar are totally false and during the course of interrogation he told the police that he is innocent and that the allegation levelled against him are totally false baseless and concocted in much as he is not politically connected and further undertakes to appear before the police or before the court as and when his presence is required and that he will not abscond, hamper or tamper with the evidence and that he is ready and willing to furnish surety to the full satisfaction of this court.
The Court after hearing the arguments advanced by his Advocate Myron Araujo felt that the concerns of the investigating officer, who was opposing bail, could be taken care of by imposing appropriate conditions on bail.
“The applicant herein is presently remanded to judicial custody as prayed by the investigating officer. The investigating officer has completed his investigation and has therefore sought judicial custody of the applicant/accused herein and therefore no purpose shall be served by keeping the applicant in custody. The other objections can be dealt with by imposing reasonable conditions. Hence, there is no other sufficient reason to keep the applicant in custody and the applicant can be granted bail,” Judge Nilima Kankonkar said.
He was granted bail on furnishing a bail bond of 20,000 and a surety of a like amount.
