PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited Matruchaya Orphanage for children at Dhavali-Ponda, on the occasion of the festival of Bhau-Beej on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Sawant said he felt extremely happy to be with the children on the occasion.

The Chief Minister thanked and praised the staff of the ashram and sent Diwali and Bhaubeej greetings to all.

Children performed rituals for the long and happy life of the Chief Minister at the occasion.

Bhaubeej or Bhai Dooj is a festival celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha during Diwali. The celebrations of this day is similar to the festival of Raksha Bandhan. On this day, sisters give gifts to their brothers.

According to a popular legend in Hindu mythology, after slaying the evil demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers. She also affectionately applied tilaka on Krishna’s forehead. Some believe this to be the origin of the festival.

Later, in the evening the Chief Minister celebrated Bhaubeej with his sister at Cuncolim.
