Panaji: Stating that the jetty constructed at Gandaulim, Cumbarjua is illegal, North Goa District President of Goa Youth Congress Rinaldo Rozario has demanded that the structure should be dismantled by March 10.

Rozario, who is a Cumbarjua resident, warned of a protest if the authorities failed to act by the deadline.

There has been strong opposition by Gandaulim locals against the jetty in the village, which they allege has been illegally erected.

Last year in July, a social media post had gone viral highlighting alleged landfilling of the Cumbarjua canal by Synergy Shipbuilders, where the company had constructed a structure to extend its dock.

The Youth Congress leader said that the structure was erected in connivance with local panchayat authorities.

He also criticised local BJP MLA Rajesh Faldessai for turning a blind eye to the illegal structure despite past assurances to act against it.

“The MLA was earlier up in arms over the project, stating that the structure had come up six metres beyond the permissible limit into the canal. He had even last year in July vowed to get the illegal structure removed forcibly. However, till today nothing has happened,” he said.
