MARGAO: The government’s decision to notify the hike in land rates for assessment of stamp duty during the purchase of land in Tiswadi, Salcete, and Mormugao talukas has stirred a hornet’s nest.
The Congress was quick to slam the government for what the party termed as the unjustified steep hike in land rates, saying the notified rates were a direct attempt to keep Goans away from purchasing land.
Charging that this notification was a direct attempt to keep Goans away from purchasing land, Congress South Goa District President Savio D’Silva charged that the government is making it more convenient for outsiders to purchase Goan land, and that is how the non-Goan builder lobby is taking over Goan land and destroying Goa.
Congres leader Savio Coutinho has demanded the immediate rollback or de-notification of the new rates and further called upon all Goans to rise up and oppose this move of the government. “The government, through this notification, is only testing public reaction by making these monstrous rates applicable only to three talukas of Tiswadi, Salcete, and Mormugao. But very soon, fresh notifications will come up, making similar rates applicable to other talukas as well,” Savio cautioned.
