VELSAO: Residents of Velsao are up in arms as demolition activities for the controversial double-tracking project continue unabated. The project, aimed at enhancing railway infrastructure, has faced stiff opposition from locals, citing environmental damage, heritage loss, and questions about its necessity.
South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes has joined the chorus of dissent, questioning the rationale behind the project. “The existing track is grossly underutilized. Instead of imposing a redundant infrastructure project, we should prioritize development that genuinely benefits the people,” he said.
The double-tracking project, part of a larger plan to facilitate coal transportation, has been criticized for overlooking the interests of Goan communities. Velsao residents have reported being displaced without adequate consultation or compensation, fueling anger and frustration.
Environmentalists, too, have raised red flags, warning that the project could destroy biodiversity-rich areas and disrupt the fragile ecosystem. Local activists have vowed to continue their resistance, urging authorities to reconsider the project in light of the growing public outcry.
The issue has escalated, with calls for state and central governments to step in and address the concerns of the people of Goa.
