The Bonderam festival, rooted in the islanders’ historical past, is named after the Portuguese word “bandeira,” meaning flag. Today, this was joyously commemorated through the Bonderam festival, which stands as a vibrant celebration of Divar’s indomitable spirit.
The festival is a cultural extravaganza that draws thousands of visitors each year. Highlights of Bonderam include the Float Parade, where each ward of the island presents imaginative floats depicting themes from Goan culture, history, and mythology. The parade is a visual spectacle that delights all attendees. Adding to the excitement, mock battles using “fotashes,” toy weapons crafted from bamboo, recreate the historical skirmishes, providing a playful yet meaningful connection to the past.
Traditional Goan live music and entertainment by the band: Black & White, Brainwash with Legit Sherwyn, and O’Luv filled the air, creating an atmosphere of joy and festivity. The performances were complemented by traditional dances, including the ghumot and mandos, performed by locals in colorful attire, showcasing the island’s cultural richness. Additionally the traditional flag march, all Goa fancy dress competition, were all part of this joyous celebration.
No Goan festival is complete without its culinary delights, and Bonderam was no exception. Food stalls lined the streets, offering a range of Goan delicacies such as sannas, patoleo, and bebinca, turning the event into a gastronomic journey that pleased every palate.
The Bonderam festival stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Divar and their commitment to preserving and celebrating their heritage. It is an event that truly captures the essence of Goan culture, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic experience of Goa’s rich traditions and vibrant community life.
