PANAJI: Diwali, one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm and gaiety in the State on Saturday.

Family members visited their ancestral home to celebrate this incredible experience of victory of good over evil. All houses across Goa were brightly lit with Akashkandil diyas (lanterns). Diwali was preceeded by the burning of Narkasura effigies, Friday night, to signify the killing of the demon by Lord Krishna. The Diwali festivities usually lasts for five days, where family members, worship, share tasty food, watching spectacular fireworks and visit temples.

Lakshmi puja, was also held on the evening of Diwali on Saturday. People and traders/businessmen offered pooja to Lakshmi, Goddess of Wealth in their decoarted homes and shops on the occasion.

This year Diwali was celebrated on a subdued note due  to the COVID-19 pandemic with its restrictions over large get-together and meetings of people.
