DONA  PAULA:  The 54th Annual Convention of the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) commenced on Friday with great fervor at the Taj Cidade de Goa Horizon. Goa, the host state, played a pivotal role in setting the tone for this highly anticipated event, which is widely regarded as the most significant gathering in the hospitality industry in India.

The convention has attracted hospitality leaders, industry veterans, and stakeholders from across the nation, all coming together to explore new ideas, strategies, and innovations that will shape the future of the sector.

The event was graced by Union Minister of Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Chief Minister of Goa, Dr  Pramod Sawant, attended as the Chief Guest, and  Minister for Tourism Rohan A Khaunte, served as the Guest of Honour. Other notable attendees included Incoming President  K Syama Raju, MD & CEO, IHCL,  Puneet Chhatwal, President of FHRAI,  Pradeep Shetty and Vice President of FHRAI  Surendra Kumar Jaiswal.

Goa Tourism has established a stall to share information with visiting delegates about Regenerative Tourism, the Ekadash Teertha circuit, and various other aspects of the state. The Department of Tourism officials managing the stall are actively engaging with attendees and conducting B2B meetings with tourism stakeholders and delegates from across India attending the event.

The session also featured a special message from the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, underscoring the importance of embracing innovation, sustainability, and resilience within the hospitality sector to meet evolving global challenges. “It is a pleasure to learn about the 54th annual convention of The Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI). The theme of the Convention, “Tourism@2047: Incredible to Inevitable India: Driving Growth and Sustainability in a Mission Mode” is an interesting and relevant one. It is only fitting that the convention is being held at Goa, one of the leading tourist hotspots of our country. Guided by the sentiment of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, traveling across India is a deeply enriching experience. It is in this context that the theme of the Convention assumes greater significance. I am sure that deliberations among various stakeholders including hotel and restaurant owners, travel and tour operators, e-commerce operators will share lessons and experiences that help draw up a futuristic blueprint to enable domestic and international tourists to return with fond memories to cherish. Best wishes for making the Convention a huge success.”

In his address, Dr  Sawant spoke about the government’s initiatives to strengthen Goa’s tourism. “Goa is on a mission to elevate its status as a world-class destination through strategic investments in tourism infrastructure and forward-looking initiatives. Our vision is to transform Goa into a prime hub that attracts both domestic and international travelers, offering them unique experiences that blend culture, heritage, and modernity. Events like the FHRAI Convention play a pivotal role in bringing together the brightest minds and decision-makers of the industry. They serve as a platform to chart the future course of our hospitality landscape, fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth that will set new benchmarks for tourism in India and beyond.”

Minister for Tourism  Rohan A Khaunte stated “Goa is not just a destination; it’s an evolving journey towards sustainable and regenerative tourism. Our vision extends beyond the allure of our beaches to embrace the rich cultural and natural heritage of the state. We are committed to promoting regenerative tourism that not only restores ecosystems but also empowers local communities, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared equitably. By focusing on innovative and responsible travel practices, we aim to transform Goa into a year-round destination that offers diverse, immersive experiences, setting a benchmark for global tourism standards.”

The welcome address was delivered by D S Advani, Chairman of the Convention, who set the stage with an insightful speech highlighting the significance of this annual gathering in fostering collaboration and growth in the hospitality industry. Following this, Pradeep Shetty, President of FHRAI, addressed the audience, emphasizing the need for continued efforts in elevating India’s hospitality standards on the global stage. His speech was a call to action for the industry to adapt to new trends and challenges while upholding its core values.

 Puneet Chhatwal, the MD & CEO of the Taj Group, took the spotlight as the Keynote Speaker. He delivered an inspiring talk, drawing on his vast experience in the industry to outline the current landscape and future opportunities in the hospitality sector. His address focused on innovation, the use of technology, and the importance of guest-centric services in redefining the standards of excellence in hospitality.

A highlight of the day was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the late Prihlad Singh Oberoi, an iconic figure in the hospitality world. The award was accepted by G S Oberoi, Former Executive Chairman of EIH Limited, who expressed his gratitude and reflected on Oberoi’s unparalleled contributions to the industry.

In addition, the Hall of Fame Awards were presented to Dr  Ajit B Kerker, Former Chairman & Managing Director, Taj Group of Hotels, Late Capt C P Krishnan Nair, Founder Chairman, The Leela Group of Hotels, and  Lalit Suri, Founder Chairman, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group; the award was received by Joshna Suri, Wife of Shri Lalit Suri, recognizing their outstanding achievements and lasting impact on the hospitality sector.

The evening’s cultural segment was a tribute to Goa’s rich heritage, featuring mesmerizing performances that highlighted the region’s vibrant traditions. This was followed by the inauguration of an exhibition that showcased the latest innovations in the hospitality sector, providing participants with an opportunity to engage with emerging trends and technologies. Vinay Albuquerque, Co-Chairman of COC, concluded the event with a heartfelt vote of thanks.
