The Commonwealth Law Conference, the largest event relating to the law world, was inaugurated at the hands of the Governor Shri P.S. Sreedharan Pillai at Grand Hyatt, Bambolim today.

The 23 Commonwealth Law Conference was inaugurated by lightning traditional lamp in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Union Minister for Law and Justice Shri Kiren Rijiju, Baroness of Scotland- the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Dr. Peter Maynard- President of the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association, Advocate General of Goa Adv Devidas Pangam and others.

Since 1955, the Commonwealth Law Conference has been bringing together lawyers, judges and academics from across the 56 nations of the Commonwealth to debate current issues affecting the legal profession in a stimulating environment where they can network and share innovation and creativity from across the globe.

Addressing the delegates the Governor, Shri P.S. Sreedharan Pillai appealed to the commonwealth countries to work for the protection of the environment.

Citing the mantra of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, One earth, one family and one future the Governor said, this will pave a path for global welfare. This, he said, is derived from a “Bharatiya” concept Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

The Governor said in India only Goa follows Common Civil Code and said maximum minority people are there in Goa.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said, the Constitution of India imbibes the sense of justice, fairness, equity and equality before the law among all of us, the citizens of this great nation.

The Chief Minister further said, apart from being the citizen of this great nation, the people of this State have bestowed with the privilege of being a law-maker, by exercising their right to vote.

Citing different types of laws, the Chief Minister said laws, family laws, civil laws, criminal laws, administrative laws etc are part of the ongoing conference. He said the discussion of intellectuals would surely yield fruitful results for the Society at large.

Union Minister for Law and Justice Shri Kiren Rijiju said many positive outcomes are expected after the conference and reminded people that we have fundamental rights and fundamental duties.

Union Minister further stated that in normal circumstances in India, an average judge handles 50-60 cases a day; have begun E-Course special project phase 3 & our ultimate target is to make Indian judiciary completely paperless; there is an alternative to face the challenges of rising pendency cases, he added.
