PANAJI: Internet service providers asked government take immediate action to stop the cable cutting by electricity department as disruptions of internet net services could have far-reaching consequences on Goa’s economy.
According to press release by affected Internet service providers, which form the foundation of the state’s digital infrastructure claimed they are being targeted, resulting in thousands of students, remote workers, senior citizens, and government offices being deprived of internet access.
With board examinations currently taking place, students are facing challenges in accessing online resources and submitting their assignments.
Remote workers and entrepreneurs are struggling to meet deadlines and manage their businesses effectively. Senior citizens, who depend on the internet for medical consultations and emergency services, find themselves in a precarious situation.
Additionally, the sub-registrar office, responsible for land registry, is also affected, causing significant delays in essential processes. The disruptions extend beyond the general public, impacting MLA offices, police departments, and various government offices, thereby impairing their operational efficiency. Media organizations, which are crucial to the state’s information landscape, are also at risk of being adversely affected.
The situation has reached a critical point, prompting corporate clients—who are vital to Goa’s economy—to consider relocating their operations outside the state. They are seeking alternatives where power and internet services can be guaranteed without the persistent threat of interruptions. This trend is alarming, as it could result in a substantial exodus of businesses and investments from Goa, inflicting severe damage on the state’s economic landscape.
Moreover, internet service providers themselves are contemplating moving their operations out of Goa. Such a move would not only result in job losses and decreased revenue for the state but would also deprive the residents of Goa of access to reliable and efficient internet services. It is imperative for the government to take swift action to halt the cable cutting and ensure that internet service providers can continue their operations without further hindrance.
