PANAJI: Karnataka claimed the overall team championship at the 24th National Para Swimming Championships, demonstrating remarkable talent and teamwork throughout the event organized by the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with the Paralympic Committee of India and the Sports Authority of Goa at the SAG Swimming Pool, Campal.
The three-day event showcased an inspiring display of talent, determination, and sportsmanship, with over 500 athletes representing 28 states.
The closing ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant, who led the occasion. He was joined by Minister for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Subhash Phal Dessai, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Guruprasad Pawaskar, Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Ferreira and Office of State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Secretary Taha Aziq.
A Special recognition was given to Satendra from Gwalior, who, though not an individual winner, has made India proud with his Padma Shri award, further solidifying his legacy in para-swimming.
The ceremony was not only a celebration but also a moment of recognition. Devendra Jhajharia, a distinguished Paralympian and Padma Shri awardee, was honored for his significant contributions to Indian sports. In response, Jhajharia commended the sports community in Goa, particularly emphasizing the tireless efforts of Shri Guruprasad Pawaskar, the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, who has been a strong advocate for inclusivity and the empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
Dr V K Dabas, a key figure in organizing committee of the competition, thanked the Sports Minister Govind Gaude and Minister for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Subhash Phal Desai under whose leadership the championships were organised in a short span of time.
The competition witnessed an impressive 29 new Indian records, showcasing the exceptional talent and determination of the athletes. Dr V K Dabas underscored the significance of such platforms, stating, “The exposure and experience gained here will equip athletes for future international challenges.”
Among the notable winners were: Men’s Senior Individual Champion: Mohammad Assim from Kerala. Men’s Junior Champion: Ravi Karthik Bhavani from Andhra Pradesh. Men’s Sub-Junior Champion: Revansh from Haryana. Women’s Senior Champion: Sharyna S from Karnataka. Women’s Junior Champion: Saee Pujari from Maharashtra and Women’s Sub-Junior Champion: Abha Ganesh from Maharashtra.
