  3. Mapusa Flower Vendors’ Refusal to Pay Sopo Rent Leads to MMC Action on Dussehra

New Arrangement Alleviates Pedestrian and Traffic Woes

On the occasion of Dussehra, a dispute arose between flower vendors in Mapusa and the Municipal Council (MMC) as vendors refused to pay the daily sopo (rent) of 500 rupees. The MMC, taking swift action, assumed custody of all the flowers. This move comes after last year’s issues, when vendors occupied nearby footpaths, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and leading to traffic jams.

The flower sellers had previously announced their decision to withhold rent payments, alleging issues with the sopo system. They claim to have provided all necessary details to the MMC, leading to this standoff.

In response, the MMC relocated the vendors to a designated area near the urban health center, adjacent to the tempo stand. This change aims to mitigate the inconveniences experienced by pedestrians and traffic congestion that marred the celebrations last year.

The dispute has sparked discussions among the local community, with some supporting the vendors’ concerns and others emphasizing the need for a more organized setup. The MMC and vendor representatives are expected to engage in discussions to reach a mutually agreeable solution.
