ONION PRICES WILL NORMALISE WITHIN A FORTNIGHT, SAYS MLA PRAVIN ZANTYE

PANAJI: Goa State Horticultural Corporation Ltd chairman and MLA Pravin Zantye said the prices of onions were controlled due to horticultural corporation.

He also said the prices of onions were falling and presently it was Rs 54 per kg. He hoped that within next 10 to 15 days the retail price will be Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg.

According to Zantye, there were as many as 1450 outlets under the Goa State Horticultural Corporation Ltd and on a daily basis 40 to 50 tonnes of onion was supplied to these outlets. He said the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) only deals with Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs and hence onions supplied by them is being supplied through fair price shops all over India.

On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa on Tuesday demanded the government should ensure that the prices of onions were stabilised and sold at same rates through the fair price shops and Goa State Horticultural Corporation Ltd. AAP spokesperson Adv Melisa Simoes said that there was vast difference in the onion prices sold through fair price shops and Goa State Horticultural Corporation. Onions are sold at Rs 34.50 per kg through fair price shops while, it varies from Rs 75-80 in outlets of Goa State Horticultural Corporation.
