Margao – Air & Water Pollution, Illegalities & Irregularities and Encrochments in Agricultural Land by Fish Mills, Food Processing Units & Steel Plants in Cuncolim Industrial Estate have turned the Cuncolim Industrial Estate (CIE) into a “Curse” for Cuncolkars. Despite my repeated demands, Government Authorities have not acted against the violators. I have now demanded a Joint Inspection by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant along with all concerned Officials immediately to put an end to the Menace & Health Hazard, failing which the Government will be totally responsible for the Law and Order situation arising out of incompetence of the Government Authorities to act against the Violators, stated Cuncolim MLA and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao.
In a press statement issued here today along with the copy of letter made by him to the Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant with a copy to Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho and Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral, Leader of Opposition has in a way served an ultimatum on the Government to act.
I am repeatedly raising the issue in the last five sessions of the Goa Legislative Assembly. Unfortunately, Government has not done anything till date. Polluted water is discharged in borwells which eventually contaminate drinking water in wells of nearby areas. Air pollution is always high due to discharge of black smoke by Industrial Units. There are almost 400 migrant workers staying illegally in factory premises, claimed Yuri Alemao.
I had demanded for constitution of a Nodal Agency to coordinate with various departments and monitor activities in Cuncolim Industrial Estate. Some of the Units are doing over production and cause loss to State Revenue. But, Government is not acting against the violators, stated Yuri Alemao.
There is huge quantity of Hazardous Waste lying in Cuncolim Industrial Estate. I was assured by the Government that it will be shifted for disposal in the last assembly session, In reality nothing has been done till date, pointed Yuri Alemao.
I hope that Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant will take serious cognizance of my todays letter and act swiftly. Government should not test the patience of Cuncolkars anymore. I am committed to put an end to this long pending issue, said Yuri Alemao.
