PONDA: Ponda citizens, particularly Muslim brethren, expressed happiness over the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to undertake restoration work on the historic lake at Safa Masjid as vibrations from heavy vehicles on the nearby highways, along with the presence of crabs, have led to the formation of cavities in the structure of the Safa Masjid Tank, thereby posing a risk to its integrity.
Constructed in 1560 by Ibrahim Ali Adil Shah, Safa Masjid is a protected site under the ASI. The adjacent lake, adorned with exquisite arches, is a significant feature of the heritage site.
The necessary repairs are a response to damage inflicted by crabs, which have compromised the intricate mihrab structure, while the vibrations from the highway traffic present a substantial threat to the overall stability of the lake. Local residents, including Safa Masjid Committee president Mulla Murtaza, have expressed his happiness over ASI’s decision. Murtaza stated, “According to the information we have received, the ASI will soon commence repairs on the crab-damaged structure of the lake. This lake, which has stood for several centuries, has developed cavities due to the activity of crabs over the past two years.”
It has been reported that the restoration process will involve dewatering the lake and employing a lime-setting technique to address the damaged areas. The lake, which contains natural springs, serves as a vital water source and a habitat for various aquatic life, including fish and crabs.
Residents believe that the primary issue stems from the invasive crabs creating holes in the structure, compounded by the vibrations caused by vehicles on the National Highway, which disrupts marine life and allows crabs to burrow deeper into the lake, leading to further damage.
It is worth noting that during heavy rainfall in the past, part of the lake collapsed, necessitating restoration by the ASI.
Mulla Ibrahim, a local from Shapur-Ponda, remarked that the tank has become infested with numerous invasive crabs over recent years, which are causing cavities and threatening the structural integrity of the tank.
He expressed concern that, if left unaddressed, this could gradually weaken the entire structure. Additionally, he noted that traffic on the nearby highway and the presence of speed bumps contribute to vibrations that exacerbate the situation.
