Shivaji Premi express anger over Panchayat’s decision, demand withdrawal of demolition resolution

June 20, 2023: A large gathering of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Premi assembled today near the Calangute Police Station to voice their strong opposition against the recent decision by the Panchayat to remove the statue of Shivaji Maharaj installed in the vicinity. More than 1000 people, including prominent activists such as Bappa Korgaonkar, Nitin Agarwadekar, Mahey Simpepurushkar, and others, gathered to protest what they deemed an inappropriate decision.

The demonstrators raised slogans against the Panchayat, expressing their deep disappointment and anger over the impending demolition of the statue. Concerned about potential law and order issues, a robust police presence was deployed at the Panchayat premises to ensure the situation remained under control. The agitators demanded an immediate withdrawal or scrapping of the demolition resolution passed by the Panchayat. They firmly believe that removing the statue would be a disservice to the legacy and cultural significance of Shivaji Maharaj. The crowd voiced their dissent passionately, questioning the support of Sarpanch Joseph regarding the decision.

In response, Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira clarified that he is not against the statue of Shivaji Maharaj; however, it is in compliance with a Supreme Court resolution that prohibits the installation of large statues along main highways, which can obstruct vehicular traffic. Despite the explanation, tensions escalated, and the police resorted to using lathi charge to control the situation. As the Sarpanch did not address the grievances of the Shivaji Premi, some individuals resorted to damaging a portion of the Calangute Panchayat building out of frustration and disappointment.

The controversy surrounding the removal of the Shivaji Maharaj statue has generated significant public attention. Supporters of Shivaji Maharaj argue that the statue represents a symbol of pride and historical significance, while the Panchayat claims it is adhering to legal guidelines regarding the placement of statues.
