In a historic move, the Government of Goa announced groundbreaking decisions today in association with Roche Healthcare marking a pivotal moment in the state’s healthcare landscape.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a congenital and life-threatening disorder causing progressive muscle weakness, affects four individuals in the state of Goa. The associated therapy’s lifetime cost is often beyond the means of these patients. Notably, one of the patients, Zoya Haji, was recognized for her talent at the recent Purple Fest in the state.
In an unprecedented step, the Hon’ble Health Minister declared the provision of Risdiplam, an innovative treatment for SMA. This novel molecule targets neuromuscular junctions, preventing the destruction of muscle fibers. The therapy will now be available for the four SMA patients in Goa, offering them an improved quality of life.
Advancements in Hemophilia Treatment:
Furthermore, the government has taken significant strides in the treatment of Hemophilia. Free subcutaneous treatment will be provided to 48 listed Hemophilic patients in the state. This groundbreaking therapy involves injecting ‘Emicizumab,’ a Monoclonal antibody. This not only provides a normal life for haemophilic patients but also offers prophylactic treatment, reducing the risks of bleeding-related complications, arthritic issues, and deformities. Goa is the first state to start this free of cost, we can call that haemophilic in future in ghe state will have near to zero bleeds.
Innovations in Breast Cancer Treatment:
In a move that sets a new standard, the introduction of Pertuzumab Trastuzumab combination, a monoclonal antibody specific for Her 2+ breast cancer patients, has been announced. This advanced treatment holds the potential for a complete cure if administered in the early stages of breast cancer. Remarkably, Goa will be the first state to implement this scheme, offering it free of cost and aiming to set an exemplary healthcare model for the rest of the world.
These transformative decisions underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring accessible and pioneering healthcare solutions, setting a precedent for other regions to follow. Goa is poised to lead the way in healthcare innovations, taking the “Goa Model” to a global stage.
