PANAJI: The Social Work Programme, D D Kosambi School of Social Sciences & Behavioural Studies, Goa University, in collaboration with the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) – AYJNISHD(D), successfully organized an International Wheelchair Day Awareness Talk, giving students a first-hand experience of mobility challenges and accessibility barriers.
The event, coordinated by Peter F Borges, saw the participation of 30 students, along with faculty members. Through a live wheelchair experience, students navigated university corridors and ramps, simulating real-life challenges faced by wheelchair users.
Muskan Shaikh, Indian Sign Language Interpreter and Faculty In-charge at AYJNISHD CRC Goa, led the session, emphasizing the need for inclusive spaces: “True accessibility goes beyond infrastructure—it’s about empathy and action. By engaging in this hands-on experience, students gained a deeper understanding of mobility challenges and the importance of universal accessibility.”
Reflecting on the event, Peter F Borges, the event coordinator, highlighted the broader impact of such initiatives: “This session was about more than just awareness—it was about transforming perspectives. Accessibility is a right, not a privilege, and it’s crucial that young minds become advocates for inclusivity in all spaces.”
A student participant, Sanvi Shirodkar, shared their insights: “It was a truly eye-opening experience. Until today, I hadn’t realized how everyday spaces could be so restrictive for wheelchair users. This session has changed how I see accessibility and inclusion.”
The event successfully sparked discussions on mobility rights, inclusive policies, and the need for accessible infrastructure in public spaces. Both Goa University and AYJNISHD(D) reaffirmed their commitment to fostering an inclusive and barrier-free society, pledging to continue such impactful awareness programs.
