MARGAO: Yuri Alemao, younger son of former Minister Joaquim Alemao on Thursday resigned from primary membership of Goa Forward Party. He is likely to join Congress Party.

Following his resignation, GFP Supremo and MLA Vijai Sardesai dissolved the party’s Cuncolim Block committee with immediate effect.

In his letter sent to Sardesai, Yuri said he is tendering his resignation from primary membership of Goa Forward Party along with post, duties and responsibilities assigned to him by the party and expressed his inability to continue further due to personal reasons.

“I also take this opportunity to thank you and Goa Forward Party for all the valuable guidance and support, time and again,” Yuri said.

When contacted, Yuri said that he decided to quit Goa Forward Party bowing to the wishes of people of Cuncolim constituency. “I had meetings with my workers, supporters and people, who told me to quit Goa Forward Party,” he said adding that the 35-member Cuncolim Block committee headed by Gabriel Fernandes has also quit the regional party.

Confirming his entry into the Congress Party, Yuri said that he will join the national party after taking his workers, supporters and voters of Cuncolim into confidence.

Yuri had unsuccessfully contested 2012 Assembly elections from Sanguem constituency on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket. He joined Goa Forward Party in August 2018 and was declared as the party’s candidate for the next Assembly polls.
